Artist Statement & Bio
To me, Editing is the worlds best puzzle. Instead of little cardboard pieces, you are given gorgeous images with captivating performances, and then you have the ability to turn it all into something entirely new, creating a new element to the work that truly gives it it’s meaning. That is whats so beautiful with the art form, and that’s what makes me love it so much.
I have always more or less been the guy at the party who stands by the wall, observing everybody as they flaunt the extroverted skills that I seemed to miss somewhere throughout grade school, but through that I have learned how to pick up on micro expressions and small character moments, and that’s what I bring to the table as an editor. Extending the shot by a couple of frames to add to the comedic beat, waiting to fade out the music a touch after picture fades, all these small decisions make an impact on the viewing experience, whether the audience picks up on it or not, and those moments are what I love as an editor.
Harlan grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and from the moment he could recognize faces, he was obsessed with all things pop culture. As he grew up, he would participate in theater, whether it be through school or local non-profits, but on the side, he would consistently post videos on his YouTube channel. They were about as good as an eleven-year-old could do as he tried to vlog throughout his day, but regardless, he had a passion for it. Fast forward to today, and he has graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in Film & Television, with a focus in Editing, and has earned a living through publishing content online with over 400,000 followers
